In our part of the world, we often take our water for granted, polluting it and wasting it. So often, humans abuse water and its surrounding environs. Increasingly, people are expressing concern about the degradation of our beautiful coast, rivers and wetlands. Community groups are coming together in the townships along the shoreline and the riverbanks to develop plans to heal, preserve and protect the water.

WATERSPIRIT is a program which offers a variety of opportunities for people to become familiar with water issues and to view them in the context of the sacredness and interrelatedness of all creation. WATERSPIRIT programs enable participants to:
  • Understand the significance of water in the context of the story of the Universe
  • Reflect on the significance of this story
  • Share in the rituals related to the water and the surrounding environments
  • Consider lifestyle changes necessary to improve the environment
  • Learn about the environment & issues related to the coast, rivers, wetlands & watershed.
  • Become involved with local groups that address such issues
  • To organize and confront environmental problems related to the water

Programs can be provided at Stella Maris or at a site of your choosing. Sr Suzanne Golas, CSJP is the director and founder of WATERSPIRIT. She is also the NGO (non-governmental organization) liaison for the Sisters of St Joseph of Peace at the United Nations where she concentrates on issues related to the environment. She is certified in Ecology and Spirituality by Genesis Farm, Blairstown, NJ and St Thomas University, Miami, Florida.
